Cultural & Religious Landmarks

Sacred sites, historic monuments, and traditional stone-built villages reveal the authentic identity of Tinos.

Church of Panagia Evangelistria

The Church of Panagia Evangelistria is the most important pilgrimage site on Tinos and one of the most significant in the Orthodox Christian world. The impressive church complex was built in 1823, following the discovery of the revered icon of the Virgin Mary.

Its marble interiors and harmonious architecture create an atmosphere of deep reverence. Each year, especially on August 15th, thousands of pilgrims visit the church, experiencing a spiritual and cultural tradition that lies at the heart of the island’s identity.

The Dovecotes of Tinos

The Dovecotes of Tinos are one of the island’s most distinctive architectural features. More than 600 ornate structures, built from local stone and marble, are scattered across the countryside and date mainly back to the Venetian era.

With their symmetrical geometric designs, the dovecotes blend functionality with artistic expression. They stand as enduring symbols of Tinos’ rural heritage and offer visitors an authentic insight into the island’s cultural landscape.

Archaeological Site of Xobourgo

The Xobourgo Archaeological Site dominates the landscape of Tinos and stands as one of the island’s most important historical landmarks. This imposing granite hill served as a fortified center from antiquity through the Venetian era.

Reaching the summit rewards visitors with panoramic views over the Aegean and the surrounding countryside, while archaeological remains reveal layers of history shaped by centuries of human presence.

Monastery of Kechrovouni

The Kechrovouni Monastery is set on the slopes of Mount Kechrovouni and is one of the island’s most important monastic sites. Founded in the 10th century, it is closely linked to Saint Pelagia and the discovery of the icon of Panagia Evangelistria.

The monastery retains a peaceful and authentic atmosphere, offering quiet paths, stone-built cells, and views across the island’s interior.

Archaeological Museum of Tinos

The Tinos Archaeological Museum is located near the port and showcases the island’s long history through artifacts spanning from prehistoric to Roman times.

A highlight of the collection is the impressive marble relief from Xobourgo, one of the most important archaeological discoveries in the Cyclades. A visit here provides valuable insight into Tinos’ cultural heritage.

The Village of Pyrgos (Panormos)

The Pyrgos Tinos, also known as Panormos, is renowned for its marble craftsmanship and artistic heritage. Whitewashed houses, marble-paved streets, and sculpture workshops define its unique character.

Home to important museums and the birthplace of notable Greek artists, Pyrgos offers an authentic glimpse into the island’s cultural soul and its enduring connection to marble.
